BLACK SOULS II Beginner Guide
First hours in Wonderland — what changes from BLACK SOULS, how to survive the SEN system, early priorities, and the mistakes that quietly cost you questlines.
BLACK SOULS II keeps the first game’s skeleton — turn-based Souls-flavored RPG, multiple endings, cycles — and grafts on two big new organs: the SEN sanity system and a Wonderland full of failable questlines. Here’s what the first ten hours want from you.
What’s different from BLACK SOULS
- Wonderland, not the Lost Empire. The map is stitched from Carroll: Park of Fog, Lutwidge Town, Queensland, the Red Castle. Its inhabitants are on loan from Victorian nightmare history.
- SEN. A sanity meter that horror events drain. At low SEN the world is not what it claims to be. Full details: SEN System guide.
- Collectible stories. 31 Fairy Tales and 3 Folk Tales — the game’s collectible backbone, several tied to its rarest rewards.
- Questlines with real failure states. Characters die, threads close, items become unobtainable. The first game forgave rushing; this one records it.
Your first-session checklist
- Light the bone fire. (71.3% of players’ first achievement — the checkpoint loop is home base.)
- Find Dodo, learn “Run like Dodo”. (53.2%.) The early game’s best defensive tool.
- Play with the Cheshire Cat in the Park of Fog. (52.8%.) He’s the hint system. Stuck later? Come back and ask.
- Fight Ketch the Executioner when you feel ready. (50.9% — the game’s first real exam. Aim at the neck.)
- In Lutwidge Town: find Red Hood, and talk to Mary Ann until she gives you Leaf’s Ring. The two series callbacks (44.5% / 37.2%) — the ring especially is easy to miss and story-precious.
Habits that pay off all game
- Grab every Fairy Tale you stumble across. Two-thirds sit right on the main routes. The rare third is second-cycle work — see Fairy Tale locations.
- Check on named characters after every boss. Same rule as the first game, higher stakes: questlines here can die with their characters.
- Respect the SEN meter like a health bar. Walking into a boss room already terrified is how first attempts end.
- Losing isn’t always losing. Losing to a Kidnapper sends you to the Slaughterhouse — a real area with real content (44.8% of players have been). The game plays with defeat; stay curious.
What to avoid
- Don’t feed Dodo to the Duchess on your first cycle. Yes, that’s a thing you can do (17.7% of players have). It has consequences for Dodo’s storyline. Decide with full knowledge, later.
- Don’t burn souls carelessly near Humpty Dumpty until you’ve read about the Chick event (“A Christmas Miracle”) — feeding him enough souls is a storyline you may want.
- Don’t chase sub-20% content early. Mad Devil Hyde, the Prince of Fear, the blank Fairy Tale — all of it assumes a developed character and story knowledge.
Your first-cycle goal
Take the main branch to the Alice End (39.1% — the intended first conclusion), keeping one or two questlines alive on the side. Then “Encore!” — New Game+ — and the full walkthrough becomes your map for everything deeper.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is BLACK SOULS II harder than the first game?
Differently hard. Combat is comparable, but the SEN sanity system adds a second resource to manage, and questlines have more failure states. The opening is forgiving — over 70% of players light their first bone fire and over half beat the first boss.
What is SEN in BLACK SOULS II?
Your sanity stat. Horrifying sights and events drain it, and low SEN changes what you perceive and how encounters behave. Managing SEN is the sequel's signature mechanic.
Can I play BLACK SOULS II without playing BLACK SOULS?
Yes, mechanically. But the game is written as a sequel — returning characters and items land far better with the first game behind you.
