BLACK SOULS borrows the Souls vocabulary — undead protagonist, hostile world, bosses with presence — and mounts it on turn-based RPG machinery. Understanding which half of that hybrid is in charge at any moment is most of what “game knowledge” means here.

The loop

You explore the mist-covered Lost Empire, fight what lives there, level, and die — dying as an undead is a mechanic, not a game over screen. The rhythm is: push into an area, learn its threats, fall back, grow, return. Because combat is turn-based and levels always matter, every wall in the game has a patience-shaped door. The 51-boss completion curve (56.4% down to 11.4%) is smooth precisely because players grind exactly as much as they individually need.

Numbers beat reflexes

This is the RPG half in charge. Damage, defense and speed come from stats and equipment; “getting good” mostly means building deliberately and preparing for the specific boss ahead of you. When a fight stops you cold:

  1. level in the surrounding area,
  2. re-examine equipment against what the boss does,
  3. check whether the game is hinting you’re early — a kill rate far below the bosses you’ve been fighting is that hint. See the boss order.

Routes are a mechanic

The character route system is load-bearing: ten of fourteen endings hang on it. Routes advance through revisited conversations and fork on choices — including quiet ones like whether you fought someone. The mechanical consequence: after each boss, do a conversation circuit. The recruitment guide covers failure modes.

Cycles and New Game+

BLACK SOULS is designed to be finished several times:

  • A cycle ends at an ending. One lettered ending per cycle, plus finished character routes.
  • Power persists, stories reset. Later cycles are for content mechanically gated beyond a first-cycle character — the sub-20% boss tier exists for developed NG+ builds.
  • Knowledge is the real carry-over. Knowing where a route forks is worth more than any stat.

The mist, thematically and mechanically

The mist that twists humans into beasts is the game’s unifying device: it explains the bosses (familiar fairy-tale figures, deformed), justifies the loop (an undead who cannot stay dead), and frames every route (each heroine is somewhere on the spectrum between person and beast). When the story starts asking what the mist actually is — around the encounter the achievements call “???” — the mechanics and the narrative fold together. That’s the game’s real midpoint, and it lands hardest unspoiled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BLACK SOULS turn-based?

Yes — it's built on classic RPG combat with turn-based battles, levels and equipment, wrapped in Souls-like structure: interconnected areas, recurring bosses and death as part of the loop.

Does dying in BLACK SOULS lose progress?

Death is part of the design rather than a hard fail state — you're an undead. Expect to die to bosses while learning them; levels and route progress persist.

What carries over in BLACK SOULS New Game+?

Your character's development carries forward while story and route states reset — which is exactly what the 14-ending structure needs: growing power, refreshed choices.
